Have you ever wondered what romantic wedding stationery truly is? It’s not just the latest trend, but a feeling brought to life on paper the very first, magical expression of the tone of your special day.

To explore this magic in depth, I had the pleasure of personally interviewing a true master of the craft: Katy Chester, founder of Olive & Millicent, who kindly agreed to share her art exclusively with our magazine.

Since 2017, in the heart of Hertfordshire, UK, Katy’s studio has been a reference point where art and storytelling merge with incredible grace. Those who discover Olive & Millicent step into a world of hand-painted watercolours, delicate calligraphy, and profound botanical inspiration. It is no coincidence that the studio is named after Katy’s grandmother and great-grandmother, both talented artists who inspired her to pursue this creative path.

Katy, who describes herself as a romantic and a lover of cats and literature, infuses her designs with the same passion she draws from her favourite love stories.

Interview

1. Your brand carries a rare refinement, filled with timeless romance. How would you describe the identity of Olive & Millicent to a bride discovering your work for the first time?

Oh thank you so much! I would say that I specialise in bringing love stories to life with soft, romantic illustrations and understated, yet elegant designs.

2. Was there a particular moment or source of inspiration that shaped your poetic, delicate and deeply romantic style? 

I’m a huge lover of literature and the great love stories found within the classics (Little Women, Pride & Prejudice & Persuasion to name a few). When I first started out back in 2017, I was hugely inspired by these stories and wanted to create designs that evoked similar feelings. Every design in my House Collection is in fact named after a couple from classic literature.

I also find nature to be a huge inspiration and can often be found out on walks, taking photos of various flowers and branches, or just taking note of all of the natural colour palettes that can be seen around me.

3. Your work stands out for its attention to detail: the paper, the illustrations, the colour palette. Which aesthetic values guide each of your creations?

Thank you! That’s so kind. Ultimately, I’m guided by my wonderful couples and the aesthetic values that matter most to them. Some couples have quite a strong vision of what they’d like me to create, whether it be a focus on illustrations, playing with textures or those little finishing touches that add a little something special.

4. Many brides desire elegant stationery that remains understated. Which elements should they consider to achieve the perfect balance between romance and simplicity?

I’m a big believer that ‘less is more’ when it comes to wedding stationery design. I think it’s important to have one theme/idea and stick with that, rather than try to do too much. With invitations in particular, it’s important to limit the amount of wording to let the design shine through.

5. When you begin designing a wedding suite, what is the very first step in your creative process? Where does the idea that leads the entire design originate?

No matter what the project, I always start working on the illustrations first. I paint everything by hand and when it comes to floral elements, everything is painted separately to allow the most freedom when it comes to putting the design together. Everything is then scanned in edited digitally before I begin to play with different compositions and layouts.

6. Paper choice can completely transform the feel of an invitation. Which materials do you love most, and what emotions do they convey to the recipient?

I love working with lots of different types of papers, but I definitely do have my favourites for particular projects. For soft, romantic watercolour designs, I love to use Tintoretto Gesso, as it closely resembles watercolour paper and makes you feel like you’re holding a piece of art in your hands, not just a wedding invitation. For special print finishes like embossing, cotton paper works beautifully and conveys a real sense of quiet luxury. For couples wanting invitations with a more tactile quality, handmade paper is perfect.

7. For brides approaching the world of stationery for the first time, what information is helpful to have ready before contacting a graphic designer?

Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that we stationers completely understand that this is all new for them, and so don’t expect them to be experts by any means. Most of us have forms on our websites with a few simple questions but to start with, it’s helpful for us to know:

• Their wedding date
• Guest numbers
• Number of households (for invitations)

8. In your experience, what are the most common mistakes couples make when choosing their invitations or planning their timeline, and how can they avoid them?

For invitations, one of the things I see a lot is couples not giving their guests very long to RSVP. I would always recommend giving them at least 4 weeks to respond, as you have to account for postal delays etc..

Also not ordering enough invitations initially can be quite a costly mistake, as it generally costs a lot more per invitation to print smaller quantities. It’s always a good idea to order plenty of spares.

For on the day stationery, the most common problem is couples missing deadlines. It’s vital to stick to the deadlines set, as these are in place for a reason and make the experience a lot less stressful for the couple.

9. How can a couple create a cohesive stationery suite that truly reflects who they are, while still maintaining elegance and visual harmony?

Oh I could talk about this all day! But my first tip is to choose a colour palette that can be carried through to the wedding day. Whether this is just something subtle like a ribbon or wax seal, or more of a statement like the card or envelope colour. If you’re wanting to add personal details, think about ways that these can tie into the design seamlessly (e.g. adding a thistle to a floral border as a nod to your Scottish roots, or adding your pet into a custom crest design). It all goes back to the ‘less is more’ thing really.

10. The United Kingdom is often seen as a major influence in wedding design: romantic details, soft palettes, thoughtful styling. Which British trends do you think most inspire the rest of Europe, and what do couples abroad — Italy included — find so captivating about this approach to weddings?

This is such an interesting perspective! And while I definitely agree that the UK is a big influence in the wedding industry, I would say that this is mostly because we are lucky enough to be such a diverse country, with lots of talented suppliers from around the world, which definitely gives us a bit of an advantage.

The trends that stand out to me are all about personalisation. Couples are now wanting things to be a lot more bespoke (like personalised pizza boxes and signature cocktails etc..). There has also been a huge increase in multiple day celebrations and I think this is definitely coming over to Europe too.
